I've been thinking some more on the idea and putting together some of the
ideas from the list as well as some from my roommate (this semester he's in
a class named Vampires in Literature). Here’s the idea pretty much finished
(if someone wants to archive it anywhere):

(An alternate)Vampire

Vampires are some of the saddest of the Unnatural creatures in the Occult
Underground. A person volunteers to be vamped by another vampire, but is
unwittingly duped into what is really a curse. This is because vampires are
horrendously lonely and they need fellow human contact desperately. The only
way to gain lasting, remembered contact is to bring someone else into the
same "zone" as them. Like demons, vampires are likely to lie to people to
get them to agree to the procedure.
Some benefits are gained from the condition, including relative invisibility
to humans and machines, increased physical capabilities, and technical
immortality (stop aging now and forever).
The curse only dawns slowly as the new vampire realizes the reason he is
invisible to people, machines, and even his own reflection is that the world
has stopped looking at him. Since he basically volunteered to "die" the
universe granted his wish and now considers him for all intents and purposes
dead. He didn't even have the decency to pass the Veil and become a demon.
And the universe doesn't like dead people to mess with the activities of the
living. It does everything synchronically possible to ensure that no action
the vampire takes has a lasting effect. He must concentrate a great deal of
effort to get a living person to even acknowledge him, much less remember
him from moment to moment. So, any push the vampire makes to the world is
met exactly with an equal push that erases or invalidates the vampire's
actions. Of course, this doesn't apply to other vampires.
However, this doesn't explain why they are called 'vampires. Vampires can
drain the ‘lifeblood’ of a living person and use that energy to become like
the living for a while. Able to interact with the world in a somewhat normal
manner, the vampire feels the rush of finally being real again. Some
vampires ritualize the act into an actual drinking of blood. This isn’t
strictly necessary, but many do it because it was how they were taught by
their progenitor, or maybe they just enjoy it.
This inability to truly affect the world raises the question of how vampires
ever got into the popular culture in the first place. Amongst those in the
know, rumors abound. The most likely is that this form of vampirism is
entirely a product of the postmodern age, a pop culture icon granted unlife
by the whims of the Stratosphere. But whether the first vampire was formed
by accident or by some strange new ritual is unknown.
