Curiously enough, there was an excellent episode of the series QUANTUM
LEAP that took this approach. Our hero kept jumping into Oswald's body at
different points in his life, trying to figure out the conspiracy and how
he could save the day, only to discover that his goal was simply to shoot
JFK--in the timestream he needed to prevent, Jackie got it by mistake and
it was her life he had to save, not her husband's.

Of course, RED DWARF did this one better by having a time-traveling JFK
assassinate himself, owing to the fact that in the timestream where he
survived, he ended up impeached and in prison for various mobster
intrigues. Better a martyr than a loser, he figured.

Those looking to get inside Oswald's head are encouraged to read Don
DeLillo's novel LIBRA, an excellent work of historical fiction.

He was so tiresome that you could spend fifty-nine minutes
in his company, and yet not consider it the better part
of an hour.
