Quantum science gets more mystical all the time. See "The Tao of Physics" by Fritjof Capra and several other books (Robert Anton Wilson tends to dwell on this, especially in the Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy and Cosmic Trigger).
What bothers me about mad scientists is that most aren't scientists: they're engineers. your average mad 'scientist' doesn't spend much time theorizing about how nature works, he just builds ray guns and giant robots. ah well...
