The best source of maps (they are invaluble) is either
going to or mailing embassies (be
careful of shadowy trenchcoaters lounging outside the
return address), or preferably, visit a large travel
agent or Automobile Association and say you're going
on holiday soon and need maps. Works for me. Maps give
a good spatial and temporal layout and allows you to
add the wonderful weird shit like superimposing
spiralling roads onto the existing country roads.

Remember that in the cities the basic amenities are
available depending on economic and political
upheaval. Outside reduce availability to almost nil.
