Maybe your friend meant 'comix' which I've seen used a few times.

'Planetary' is worth reading in that vein as is DC's new Swamp Thing
series.
Planetary is a bit more grandiose in scale than most UA games
will probably be, but tone it down a bit and things like the dimensional
portals and giant monsters can become strange bits of high weirdness
or examples of Cliomancer spells gone awry.
The new Swamp Thing series has so far followed the original's
daughter Tefe as she tries to work out whether she's really human
or not and what that means. On that angle it vibes well with UA,
and Tefe's powers aren't much beyond what the Freak's might be.
