My opinion:
The amount of money is arbitrarily set based on the
perceived value dictated by society.
In America, as a college graduate, I often make purchases
for $20 US to $50 US. Anything more than $100 US is quite
a strain for me. If I'm in England, and I spend $100 US in
pounds, then I perceive that as $100 regardless of the
actual amount of pounds.
So, I'd wager a guess that you can set the amount to an
amount that would make the average consumer cringe when his
credit card is swiped through. If $100 AUS does that, then
use that, and apply that to $100 AUS equivalent if the
plutomancer travels.
My thoughts anyway
