I've had pretty good luck with apartments. I'm only on my
third apartment now; I hate moving. My first apartment was
during college. It returned $40 out of $150 to cover
carpet cleaning and a hole in a closet door which was my
fault. I deemed that as fair enough.

My second apartment's deposit was paid by my roommate.
However, he said that he got most of his deposit back.
They didn't even charge him for the wallpaper in the
bathroom torn up because the litter box was there. They
also didn't complain that we forgot to clean the oven when
we moved out (and with three bachelors there, I believe it
was cleaned only once in 2 years because a girlfriend was
sick of seeing the gunk). The only expense was the carpet
cleaning.

We speculated on why they were so nice to us. Our solution
is that we were the first clients of the current leasing
agent. We showed up just as she started work. So, she
remembered us as good tenants. Also, we were surrounded by
redneck trailer trash who blasted radios and owed child
support. So, we were very good tenants in her eyes.
