I walk slower today, cannot
jump as high, and am more prone to tripping over my own right foot because
of breaking my ankle. And it happend in a stupid fashion: I slid down a
dew-covered hill in such a way as to snap my ankle bone in half.

Which ankle bone. there's a couple (though not asmany as wrist bones).
Even with treatment the ankle won't be good as new as it is not a long bone
and cannot be immobilized as well with modern medicla techniques which is
why pins often have to be used though they don't prevent grinding.

My horrible ones include an ACL tear and heat exhaustion (at the same time!)
that occured when I was training for marathoning. I had run out of water
and was on the highway about eight miles from the nearest town. I lost
balance and felt the rip followed by the pain spreading through my leg. The
most profound effect was a desire to run much faster as I feared that I
would die if I didn't get into town. That took a couple of months of rehab.

Another is AC seperation. This isn't really felt that much since the joint
isn't encapsulating. There's just a little burning sensation and the
shoulder moves differently than it normally does since the tendons aren't in
the right tracks. What really hurts is rehab that comes afterwards. Even
getting the shoulder back into the joint cavity doesn't hurt that much.
