I'd say, if the school was small and/or composed of only one cabal or so (like Pornomancy/the Sect of the NG) it'd be one universe they're pulling into ours/creating.  If there's adepts of the magick school not related to the original cabal of X-mancers, then they could make up their own worlds.  That's how I'd work it, and have the original school really hate the lower level competitors.

Who was it that mentioned the imaginary world created by some British authors while children? (the Bronte sisters? I forget and am too lazy to search the archive.) 

The idea reminds me of a Champions campaign I was involved in long ago, where 'our' universe (the superhero one) was being mixed with a fantasy world, due to the accidental influence of one of our NPC friends (from that dimension).
