Mmm.

Could be "demons" -- i.e., the spirits of the restless dead.  (If I recall
correctly, at least one of the classic theories of faerie origins holds
that that is, in fact, what they are.)

Maybe the classic faerie changeling is not a *new* child at all, but the
original child taken as a host-for-life by some enterprising demon.  (An
infant inhabited by an adult mind; scary thought.  Weren't changelings
supposed to have the gleam of preternatural intelligence in their eyes?)
