Widely believed? Perhaps. Accurate? Hardly so. In fact, the pilot and
co-pilot were unaware that he had departed the plane until quite a bit of
time after the fact. This is why tracking him down proved to be so
difficult right from the get-go. They didn't have a convenient "spot" to
start from, but rather a line of possibilities, along which he could have
bailed at any point. He instructed the pilot to fly very low, which was
dangerous, considering that they were flying through mountainous terrain.
He _told_ them that it was for purposes of evading radar. In fact, however,
he at least understood in principle that the cabin isn't hermetically
sealed. Drop low enough (where the outside air pressure is higher, and
closer to normal), and you can open one of the doors without depressurizing
the cabin, or, as it turned out, activating any warning lights in the
cockpit. Now -- was it smart to parachute into mountainous terrain, at
night, with two suitcases strapped to you? Prolly not. Personally, given
the mood of the country after the fact, I'd say he merely reactivated the
Bandit King archetype, embodied by Robin of Locksley and other 'dashing
rogues.'
