If I recall right, this is entirely possible.  The evolution of Archetypes
is a major aspect of our societal evolution.  I believe there was an e-mail
or two on this exact concept.  If I can paraphrase, some people will try to
follow the original concept of an avatar, while others will stretch their
boundaries and redefine that process.
