Apologies if these have already been mentioned (by the way. where are the
archives hidden?)
Books:
Chester Himes - COTTON GOES TO HARLEM, ALL SHOT UP. Chester Himes wrote
funny, raunchy, violent brilliant crime books set in Harlem in the 1960's,
about two detectives (Coffin Ed Johnson and Gravedigger Jones), trying to
do the right thing in a corrupt world.
Rachel Pollack - THE UNQUENCHABLE FIRE, TEMPORARY AGENCY, GODMOTHER NIGHT.
Intelligent fantasy about what happens if magic comes back in a big way.
Geoffrey Wolff - BLACK SUN: THE BRIEF TRANSIT AND VIOLENT ECLIPSE OF HARRY
CROSBY. Biography of Harry Crosby - amateur poet, dilettante, publisher,
sun-worshipper. Makes an excellent cautionary tale about the dangers of
trying to become an archetype.
Comic books:
Matt Wagner's MAGE. Fun with grackleflints running casinos, kelpies
breaking young girls' hearts, and ancient Irish gods in trenchcoats.
GRENDEL's probably a good bet too, just to remind overconfident magicians
and avatars of how nasty a single, very smart person can be.
MISTER X. Suffered from "writer of the week syndrome," but Dean Motter's
original issues were golden. An architect plans the perfect city, but
corruption leads to flaws in the design (and therefore the population of
said city).
