Did you ever read The Ceremonies by T.E.D. Klein?  It has a very small town 
totally cut off from the world, meanwhile being only a few miles from New 
York (or was it New Jersey?).  Pick it up on eBay or at some used bookstore 
if you can.  It's great HPL-style horror.  (You can get it at your commercial 
bookstore in an incredibly slimmed-down version called The Events at Poroth 
Farm, which is included in a horror story antholgy called "A Century of 
Horror:  1970-1979").
