Everyone has had great suggestions here, but I thought I'd add a few of my own ideas as options.
>1. Goals for cabals, other than world domination, amassing magickal power,
>joining the Clergy etc. I am particularly thinking of a powerful Plutomancer cabal
>here.
Gaining some artifact (the Holy Grail, Spear of Longinus, a Hand of Glory, something big or little depending on the cabal) for some reason (not neccesarily for what it does but just to have it, which sort of fits the plutomancer mindset). Summon some huge demon/elder god/immanentize the eschaton (like many lovecraftian cabals or some versions of the Illuminati). Knowledge (they want to know what's really going on). Immortality (most alchemists for centuries searched for immortality and the Philosopher's stone. Maybe they're looking to turn lead into gold, literally or figuratively)
>2. Alternative theories for the nature of reality. I don't want my PCs to start the game knowing about the IC, the 333 archetypes etc., so has anybody
>come up with any explainations for magick,
manipulating auras, calling spirits from the other world to aid you, imposing your will on reality. Altering your mental reality tunnel, which thereby alters reality to match it (does this make a lick of sense?) utilizing advanced quantum physics
> avatars,
Contact with higher intelligences, like Crowley being contacted by Aiwass or Leary, and a host of others being talked to by dogs from Sirius. discovering their Buddha nature sort of thing. activating hidden potentials in everyone.
>ascension
becoming the Buddha or achieving Gnosis, being kidnapped by aliens or other mysterious disappearances. discovering your the son of god(s)
>or the Comte
immortal, via any theory thereof (anything from mythology to Highlander to alchemy). interdimesnional traveler/time traveler/etc. He's God taking a human form to walk amongst his subjects (like a disguised king) or Satan.
>that could plausibly be formulated by an adept, avatar or whatever that
>sound reasonable but have no connection with the truth.
Start reading some publications on fortean and strange occurences. They'll give you loads of theories, of greater and lesser value. Perhaps Cosmic Trigger by Robert Anton Wilson will be helpful, as it presents numerous theories for explaning weird stuff. or not, if you like.
