I was not suggesting that either actually did anything of importance. I was rather suggesting their importance in the American collective psyche was due to the general public linking their characters with that of "The King" (and explaining why the death of Kennedy is so much more important than his life, and why Elvis keeps showing up, both of which are due to subconscious connections with the Christ figure, perhaps). Precisely the fact that neither accomplished as much as their reputations would seem to show is evidence towards what I was arguing, that they achieved what they have by matching mental archetypes rather than through accomplishment.
(Another example of the King archetype I should have mentioned, Emperor Norton I of the United States, and Protector of Mexico, accomplished basically nothing yet survived simply on the graces of his being King, and so has survived in history as a weird historical anomaly rather than being forgotten as a crazy man as hundreds or thousands of other people in similar circumstances did)
