I'm not sure if Kenedy and Elvis actually count as apt
examples. This may be a very cynical modern attitude,
since all heros have flaws, but Kenedy was very modern
and popular...he said a lot of great stuff, but he
didn't necessarily DO as many good things as those
mentioned in the past. As for why he was killed,
that's still a total unknown.
Elvis, on the other hand, was totally a popular
entertainer. He wasn't martyred for anything, he died
due to his own abuse of food and drugs (and stress,
most likely), and didn't really contribute much to
society other than some fairly cool music, trends in
musical behaviour, etc.
Of course, some would argue that in modern times, any
martyr figure would be fairly skewed due to how Grey
the times are morally anyway...*shrug*
