Dear Manfred,

you are correct, when the radiation mode is set to standard, only the .shm, no .ism will be generated. If you have a shading matrix in your simulation folder which fits your zone and surface information, it will be used for the calculation. You can also check if an shm has been used by looking at the .lst file. There you will find a notice saying:

*** Notice at time : 0.000000
    Generated by Unit : 56
    Generated by Type : 56
Message : Shading mask file *.shm for external windows exists and will be used.

Best,
Christina

Hey David,

first, thanks for the answer. I solved the problem now and want to let everybody know the solution, if somebody wants to walk the same path.

Your way of thinking was mine as well – so I knew that the requirement for convex zones only applies to the detailed radiation modes, but in all the documentations is written that in order to generate a shm-file, the detailed model for beam radiation distribution has to be activated. If I do that, I can’t even generate the shading/insolation matrix, because it is one button for both ism and shm file and the result is an error message („The internal solar distribution did not sum up 1. Make sure that the zones with detailed beam radiation mode are CONVEX and CLOSED!!”), due to concave zone. So I tried to generate the shading/insolation file with the standard mode and I received the shm-File. But I didn’t know, if the matrix was taken into account in the simulation. I simulated once with shm file in the directory and once without --> there was a difference in radiation on the window.

So: also with standard mode for beam radiation distribution the shm-matrix is used by the simulation, you just have to generate it in advance.

Best regards,

Manfred

Manfred,

I believe that the requirement for convex zones only applies to using the detailed radiation mode to deal with the interior radiation exchange. In other words I think it applies only to the *.vfm file and not to the *.shm file since the *.shm file deals with shading on the outside of the building. Please someone correct me if I am wrong about that.

kind regards,

 David

Hello everyone,

I use trnsys3D to import to TRNBuild and I have a few shading objects. In the existing model I just used shading factors from PHPP, only differencing between summer and winter. Now I want to have more detailed shading factors and want to use the shading matrix (shm) but as I read in the documentations I need convex zones for it. Or is it working with concave zones, if I just use the detailed radiation model for the beam radiation distribution (and for the diffuse radiation distribution and the longwave radiation exchange within a zone the standard models)? As far as I can see the geometry of a zone is indifferent for the shm-File – isn’t it?

If it really does not work like that, my idea was to build up the same 3D-Modell but with only fictitious concave zones, so I could get the shading factors in the shm-file. Is there any type I can use to read the shm-matrix into my simulation with the concave zones?

Big thanks in advance!

Best regards,

Manfred Schindler
