Julian,

   The two options I see are either to edit the file and "clean it up" 
so that the text columns all have the same number of characters or (and 
probably preferably) you can open up the file in Excel and strip out the 
text column, save a copy of the file as a *.csv file, then read it with 
an unformatted reading version of Type9.
