Beatrice,
We did some work awhile ago to look at whether the performance of
various kinds of HVAC equipment scale linearly or not. We looked at
things like Capacity divided by RatedCapacity and PowerUse divided by
RatedPower and we looked at them over a wide range of operating
conditions. We found that among the HVAC components that we looked at,
heat pumps (water source, air source, etc.) and chillers (both water and
air cooled) scale very well and very linearly. The one caveat is that at
very low part load ratio, the type of compressor used in the device does
matter. In general, it is fine to leave the normalized performance data
files alone and to enter the capacity, flow rates, and rated power as
parameters to the model.
Best,
David
