Ivan,
  In addition to Adrien's comment, make sure that the file you are 
reading is ascii text; Type9 can only read text files and cannot read 
the *.xls format (or Matlab's native format).

 Also check to make sure that the file does not have a 0KB size. 
Sometimes when a file isn't found where it was expected, a blank one is 
created. In this case, you would have gotten a slightly different error 
message (end of file found) instead of "unable to read," but just in case...
