Michael, 

Thanks for the email.  What you described seems to reflect exactly what was happening.  I ended up grabbing all files in the original directory and dropping them over to the Distributable directory at once, but closely watching the overwrite dialogue box that pops up ("overwrite ____ with this one?") during the process whenever an alike-named file is next for overwriting.  In a few cases, there were 0 kilobytes listed as the file size of the (to-be) overwritten file.  I promptly chose to overwrite those.

It works now. :)

I think that in this case Error message 71 is used (incorrectly) by Type 96
to indicate any error that happens reading the data file, not just a problem
with the logical unit. You seem to be getting different errors depending
where the input (dck) file is located so I would think that the problem
comes from an incorrect path. Maybe you are using a relative path that only
works in the original folder but not in the distributable folder. Sometimes
TRNSYS leaves empty files around when that happens, so if you find an empty
file with the name that Type96 is referring to this would be an indication
of where it is looking for.

I remember that at some point TRNEdit had a tendency to mangle some
pathnames when you created the distributable - I am not sure it is still the
case but it would be worth checking the path of the Type96 file in the final
.TRD file (the one in the distributable folder).

I've tried your suggestion below with no success.  I then tried 9953, 9954,
and 9955 as well, with no success.  I've attached this portion of the .trd
file.  As you can see, I've commented out some of the lines.

A curious note: The .trd file runs in Trnedit in the original directory just
fine.  I tried running the same file (in Trnedit this time, not
stand-alone!) after copying it over to the Distributable directory, and the
same error described below happens.  Below, "I don't get any errors when I
run the simulation within Trnedit", was in context of running the file in
Trnedit in the original directory, not the Distributable directory as I've
just done.

This deepens the intrigue, but suggests that I've overlooked something more
fundamental in the Distributable-creation process.  I've copied all files I
believe and made all reference paths relative to the Distributable
directory.  Let me know if there is anything else that comes to mind which I
should do to get this Distributable working.

Kent,
 Try setting the logical unit parameters referenced by Type96 (and the
logical units in the corresponding ASSIGN statements) to some other numbers
(953, 954, 955 for example). There are some spots in the Trnsys kernel where
a logical unit number is internally assigned to a temporary file that needs
to be opened up. The kernel tries to pick a logical unit that isn't
otherwise needed but it doesn't always succeed.

would be most appreciated.
