Kiki,

It is usefull if you give more info (type numbers for example). But, 
generally, such 'safety' can be added for numerical stability. This can have 
to do with differences between reals and integers. 0 can for example be 
approaximated by an integer equal to -0.0000000000000...0x. If the next 
component cannot handle such value (for example because of a square of that 
value) the equation you mention avoids that an imaginary number appears 
which might have caused instability otherwise.


The other thing in your question ... radiation can be negative. If the 
thermal flux between a cold and warm surface in visible contact is 
described... It just depends on your definition...
