Dear Prof. Nyak,
We wrote a model of a photovoltaic (PV) array that had a PCM layer
built into it. Our approach in modeling it was to write an energy
balance on the layer and to keep track of how much latent energy of
melting/solidification had been "used up" based on the net energy
flow into or out of the layer. We asked the user to supply the
specific heat of the liquid PCM material and the specific heat of the
solid PCM material and we linearly interpolated between the two to
find the specific heat of the layer when it was partially solid and
partially melted. I have heard of some PCM thermal storage tank
models but I do not have any specific experience with them.
Cheers,
David
