Hi,

I think you are referring to a "earth-air heat exchanger".

I think the expression "canadian well" is a 
translation from the french "puits canadiens".
However, I am not sure that the expression "puits 
canadiens" originated from Canada (!).
I heard the expression for the first time a few 
years back from researchers in France.

I think transsolar has a type (260) that models "earth-air heat exchanger".
