*Studio Proposition:*

Architecture is often seen as a balanced solution to a host of problems
imposed by aesthetic aspirations, use and program, location and site,
immediate external environment, occupant comfort and regulatory constraints
among other considerations. Although most of these are addressed in design,
the external and internal environmental solutions are often not included,
and rarely fully integrated

This studio, as part of *Built Ecologies* program at CASE
<http://www.case.rpi.edu/> proposes to bring to the forefront a resolution
for environmental sensitivity, both external and internal, whilst addressing
the pressing issues of energy and climate at a global and local scale. The
studio employed ecological thought and design process to study, analyze and
design systems at varying scales that are fully integrated, function in a
harmonized fashion and resolve to a balanced architectural solution.

Three students, Xiaofei Shen, Francesco Bedeschi and Kyle Schillaci will
present their final projects highlighting the environmental analysis and
design process integration using various tools and resultant outcomes.
Varun Kohli, Adjunct Professor at CASE, will introduce the studio.

*Speaker Bios:*

*Varun Kohli RA, LEED AP BD+C*

Varun is the founding partner at Merge Studio based in New York. He
currently heads design projects globally incorporating a multitude of
typologies including commercial, retail, multi-residential, master-planning
and hospitality based projects spread out in the US, India, Australia and
the Caribbean. He has over 18 years of experience with New York based
architectural firms including Beyer Blinder Belle and Skidmore, Owings and
Merrill (SOM). Varun holds a graduate degree in Sustainable Environmental
Design from the Architectural Association, School of Architecture in London
and a Bachelor of Architecture from the City College of New York. He
currently teaches the ‘Environmental Parametrics’ design studio at the
Center for Architecture, Science and Ecology (CASE) in New York City. In
the past, he has served as a guest lecturer and presented papers at
international conferences including Passive and Low Energy Architecture
Conference (PLEA), Passive and Low Energy Cooling Conference (PALENC),
Indian Green Building Congress and others.

*Xiaofei Shen*

In 2014, Xiaofei Shen finished his graduate studies at CASE, where he
researched on Adaptive Ecological Building Interface System. He received a
Bachelor of Architecture degree from Tongji University in Shanghai in 2012.
At CASE, he engaged in parametric modeling and critical design methodology
focusing on high density and ecological environment, producing truly
integrated graphic representations of both analysis and design. His
professional experiences include Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects in
Copenhagen and Atelier L+/Tongji Design Institute in Shanghai. He has also
interned with RTKL, SOM, Atelier Deshaus and sciSKEW Collaborative.

*Francesco Bedeschi LEED AP, AIA Int. Assoc.*

Based in Rome, Francesco is a founding partner of the firm Bedeschi &
Bompiani Architetti Associati. He holds Bachelors in Architecture from
University of Rome “Sapienza” with a focus on preservation of historic
buildings and he recently earned an M.Arch. II at CASE. He teaches
integrated architectural design and restoration at the University of
Arkansas, Rome Center and is the site coordinator of the study abroad
program of RPI in Italy. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the
Green Building Council Italia. In 2010, he founded the Lazio chapter,
elected President, and has been the first coordinator of the Technical
Committee for the development of the Historical Building Protocol at GBC
Italia. Francesco is also the Director of European Projects with SINERGI
Integrated Building Sciences, a US-based company providing sustainability
services with a specific focus in LEED and Commissioning of systems and
building envelopes. He currently manages projects in Italy, Switzerland and
Qatar.

*Kyle Schillaci*

Kyle recently finished his Masters of Environmental Parametrics at CASE and
holds a technology consultant position for a research group at Penn State
university focusing on “collective action concepts and strategies for
institutional design and policy implications with the end goal of resilient
community and ecological design” [polyspace.info]. Kyle has collaborated
with scientists ranging from etymology to Malaria vaccine logistics in
Niger, Africa, using Grasshopper and parametric processes to link disparate
data into cohesive visualizations of system abstraction; that provide
higher level of guidance to on ground initiatives.
