Welcome, Viviana!
We are an eclectic bunch of generalists and specialists, geographically diverse, working in both the commercial world and academia. There is a vast amount of experience on here, but also many gray hairs! So, we appreciate you bringing down the median age by some small amount.
As well as day-to-day simulation, there are many niche disciplines within our storied ranks. For example, there are specialists in weather data, statistics, and measurement and verification. Most of the software developers are also represented on here.
I’m a UK-based ASHRAE-phile. I’m still learning, but am happy to wade in on subjects that I feel confident in answering.
Thank you for your forum feedback 😊
Cheers
Chris

Hello everyone,
I’m part of the new generation of modelers (2023 graduate) and recently joined this list (around November, if I’m not mistaken). This is my first time participating in a discussion here, so I hope I’m doing this correctly! I’ve been part of other forum formats before, but mailing lists are new to me. If this message doesn’t appear correctly in the thread, I apologize in advance.
I’ve been working on connecting with as many platforms and organizations as possible. In the past, I’ve used LEEDuser to find answers to specific questions, though it often feels a bit impersonal—almost like shouting into the void. I tend to search and read through threads rather than asking questions right away.
In my experience, the Ladybug forum has been the most helpful so far, as it allows users to share files, troubleshoot issues, and post solutions. However, I often hesitate to ask questions there, worried they might seem too basic, so I usually try to figure things out on my own—which can be a slow process. Because of that, I haven’t yet felt fully integrated into the broader modeling community.
Joining the BLDG-SIM mailing list was a step toward changing that. I’m excited to learn from everyone, and start contributing to the conversation.

I wanted to hear other suggestions before I chimed in. Chris and David are right, BLDG-SIM has been dwindling in usefulness. Last year, it only had 58 posts for the entire year. I haven't looked at LEEDuser in years but maybe BLDG-SIM is still the best thing available. BLDG-SIM has over 2200 subscribers so I would guess that if you have a question about LEED and modeling, you will probably get an answer. And people are still joining.
I look and participate at unmethours regularly but it is only for questions and answers and doesn't really handle announcements or discussions or surveys or random thoughts and in my opinion (hopefully this won't offend anyone) it has a weak "community feel" compared to BLDG-SIM in its heyday. I looked for a while at changing BLDG-SIM to use Discourse which is what Ladybug uses but it seems high maintenance compared to a mailing list and I personally don't have the bandwidth for it on a regular basis. I've also considered changing the BLDG-SIM mailing list hosting software (Mailman) to a newer version that makes the archive more searchable and usable but that would still be an email mailing list. For a while I thought LinkedIn was enough since it essentially can do the "announcement" part but it doesn't do the discussion or community aspect, at least very well.
I really think a new generation of modelers would probably benefit from a good forum and I would be glad to help foster that. To me the trick is having something that both the young modelers and the experienced (nice way of saying older) people both use. I'm not sure what that is but it probably not a mailing list or at least not exclusively a mailing list.
Members of this mailing list, if you are just starting out in doing building performance modeling, what type of forum or mechanism would you prefer to be able to ask questions and stay informed?
For us "experienced" members, please reach out to the the newest and least experienced modelers that you know and ask them the same question and report back to us.
Maybe we can bootstrap something new that is BLDG-SIM-like into existence that can help the entire modeling community.

I have to admit, nowadays I manage a team, and have not been doing hands-on modeling for a while. Getting rusty.
That being said, I have always enjoyed perusing this forum, and would love to see it get active again. The peer mentoring thing cannot be overstated.
Happy New year everyone. May 2025 bring good things!

Perhaps we’re all working a lot harder and have little time for frivolous forum posting!
I’m happy to continue on this forum. I posted on here in September last year and it was very helpful - many thanks to those who responded. I thought that there might be a forum out there that’s more active for this subject, specifically.
There’s a need for something general such as bldg-sim. A new generation of modellers is coming through, and they seem to be making all the same mistakes that we made. They should be moving on to bigger and better things!
I’ve benefited of being able to get one-to-one mentoring more recently. This has been relatively informal (e.g., paying with Paypal) but has helped me get up to speed in areas that I either have no experience, or am rusty in. I’m lucky to have the network to do this.
Perhaps bldg-sim is a good B2B place to seek out (informally paid) mentoring relationships for those subjects that are niche to us, but everyday for other professionals?
Cheers/ Chris

I’m all for this forum in general, but seems to be dwindling.
There was also a discord server setup by Allen Mei.
For LEED specific questions there is also the subscription service for LEEDuser.com that I still use from time to time.

Happy new year bldg-sim’rs!
I’ve bagged the first post of 2025 😊
We used discuss a lot of 90.1 and LEED on this forum, but it seems that this isn’t the hottest place on the subject anymore.
Can anybody make any recommendations? Do I join the eQuest group, even though I don’t use eQuest!? Or, do I finally log into my dormant unmet hours account?
Thank you in advance
Chris
