Hi
I am involved in a project outside the US (Ireland) where the Developer
has a 2 storey underground basement car park attached to 250,000 sqf
office block.
As per the local practice and building regulations it is proposed that
the under ground car park would be naturally ventilated, with openings
approximately 2.5% of the total floor area.
In order to achieve LEED certification the Perquisite Minimum Indoor air
quality must be achieved which states compliance with ASHRAE 62.1 -
2007.
ASHRAE 62.1-2007 states that carparks must have mechanical extraction of
3.7 l/s per m2, or else if naturally ventilated must have 50% of two
opposing walls completely open. My client does not want to fit
mechanical extract as the cost will be significant in terms of capital
and operational costs, and the natural ventilation option using 50% of
external wall space is not practical.
Has anyone any knowledge or experience with naturally ventilated
underground carparks attached to buildings which have achieved LEED
Certification?
I have proposed using monitoring on existing similar carparks to show
Carbon Monoxide levels are below the required 20 ppm threshold, in
addition to CFD modelling for the proposed design.
If would be grateful if anyone has any thoughts on this?
Regards
Michael
