9? There's eleven in a side. And the bowler isn't allowed to throw.
Cricket has many traditions (and rituals) and even some number-based hoodoos
of its own (f'rinstance, members of the English team not currently batting
are required to have their feet off the floor when their team score is a
multiple of 111, known as Nelson's number, while the Australian evil number
is 87, despite the fact that the reputed origin of the jinx on 87 is
provably false), but is less curse-ridden than baseball.
It may be relevant that the traditions of cricket lend it an air of nobility
and purity and all that is good and right in the world; see also "just not
cricket" as a way of describing anything that's wrong. Not so much with the
curses, although a cliomancer could possibly do something with the Ashes.
Baseball has had a dark side back through the Black Sox.
American sport seems to have a lot more potential for working some symbolic
mojo, but cricket might be usable as protection if someone works out some
schooling of sport-based magick.
