Yah, that's how it struck me too.  My first thought was the
conversation went something like this:

Interviewer:  Does this sort of thing happen often?

Doctor:  Well, it was the only time I ever pulled out an
invertebrate... (mumbles under breath:) Though God alone knows how
many homonculi I've had to flush out of various  crevices.

Interviewer:  I'm sorry, didn't quite catch that.

Doctor:  Oh, you know, kids sometimes lodge pencil leads, pieces of
food, and things in there.
