I read a biography of Disney (I think the title was "Hollywood's Dark Prince") that said he claimed, until his dying day, that there was no subtext whatsoever to any of his works.  All the absent parents?  Doesn't mean a thing, just stories for kids.

It also contained the vignette that the first time "Bambi" was shown in New York City, the theater had to replace half the seats.  The audience had soiled them in abject terror, probably when Man came to the forest.
