He claimed to learn about manipulating people through observing carnies 
and the Sunday morning tent revivals, but he didn't start anything of 
his own until later.  The Church of Satan evolved out of the "Magic 
Circle" meetings at his house, starting in '64 or '65.

Anger's Hollywood Babylon is a fun read, but not what I would consider a 
good factual resource.  It's a collection of rumor and legend, nothing more.
