Addendum to my first post: don't forget the cigarette industry!
Carcinomancy would be in full swing, and the knowledge that cigarettes are
bad for you was tucked deep in the closet in the 50s.
The modern highway system was Eisenhower's project. Any cross-country
adventures will take players through whatever backwater town you like, since
they can't count on a straight drive from New York to Las Vegas (or
wherever).
The labor movement had moved from fighting underdog in the progressive
era to entrenched power block. You might squeeze some symbolic tension from
the concurrent fear of communism, which celebrated labor above all, and
labor-as-establishment in the west.
