Perhaps that's part of the ritual. Granting the animal the name and birthday 
of someone, along with gifts representative of their personality could give 
it a sort of proto- or semi-soul, usable only for purposes such as this, 
equal to half the Soul Stat of the other member of the proxy bond. After 
all, an animal's body can't hold an entire soul, and if it could, most 
animals aren't smart enough to figure out how to hang on to it.

Cats, on the other hand, are aware of how short changed they are, and that's 
why their so keen on taking everyone else's souls.

This sounds like it might be what Paul Borowski's up to.
