Upon further research, this disease seems creepy in two ways:

-It may be true, which is creepy all by itself.
-It may not be, and may in fact be an offshoot of a kind of delusion
that was legitimized by the internet and then printed by a lazy
journalist.

Mass delusion is pretty creepy, I think.
