Smart money's on a family member or caretaker.  Option #2 is someone 
whose "Cute Baby Aww Protect Don't Hurt"  brain circuit is messed up.

I remember reading a review of a book called "Why Killers Kill" (IIRC) 
and always meant to get it but never did.  Anyhow, it was written by a 
neurologist who examined a bunch of people who'd done really awful, 
just sick fucked up Hannibal Lechter style crimes.  His thesis was that 
most of them would have (1) suffered from a hard cranial impact at some 
point, (2) been abused as children or... shit, there was some third 
thing but my four-year-old is six inches away telling me about the 
birds that only his eyes can see.  Maybe the third thing was sexual 
molestation.  Anyhow, he found that there was only a TINY sample that 
had none of those factors, a minority had only one, and most had two or 
more.  I think that's it anyhow.

So, guard your noggin.
