It also stops those land surveyors from coming around
and cutting up through magical boundaries with their
cold mathematics and strange tripodded spyglasses.

But I'd say the big wooden pillar was probably carved
into the likeness of some sort of deity into which the
Patron Saint was incorporated.

And if they don't wave their big idol around the well
three times, the accumulated sins will come flying
back up to pester people. In UA terms, the sins could
be exorcised demons.

Chris, who knows of no well deep enough for his demons.
