Man, how do I forget about the obvious occult explanations?

I just watched the movie Chinatown, which is a good example of how the
plot can hang off of public records of the sale of land.  Of course, in
UA they're doing it to become the True King oftheir own housing
devlopment, or buying up a historical spot to piss off some cliomancers
or something.

Though the antagonist's motives in Chinatown aren't necessarily that
different.  When Jack Nicholson asks him basically "you're insanely
rich - why did you pull this big swindle?"  he merely answers "The
future!" which sounds potentially full of mystic significance.
