I guess I should say that the cult used "recreational
drugs."  I believe he was taking LSD and other
hallucinogens.  

For grins, another disturbing personal anecdote--A
friend of mine had her sister driven to schizophrenia
in much the same way.  There was some family history
of it anyway, and the sister was taking LSD
recreationally.  She married a guy from New Zealand,
and she moved there.  Once isolated for her friends
and family, the husband started beating her. 
Apparently the combination of the isolation, the
abuse, and the acid sent her over the edge.  

She got divorced and came back home.  The disturbing
part is that my friend would do stuff to her like go
into her bathroom and glue all of her combs, brushes,
mirrors, etc., to the ceiling.  

Talk about sisterly love, eh?
