I have a book called Looking at Death, which, if memory serves, tied in
with a photographic exhibition examining attitudes to death over the
years.  One chapter was devoted to the Victorian custom of taking
post-mortem photographs of loved ones, especially children, to honour
their memory.

The creepiest photograph in the book was of a dead baby.  What made it so
creepy was that the parents had taken some pictures of the child before it
had died and had cut out the eyes from one of them and pasted them onto
the picture of the dead child.  The effect of the dead baby staring out of
page with living eyes remains one of the most disturbing things I've seen.

You know what?  That picture would fit in perfectly on this site.  *shudder*
