Inspiration has struck in the form of a hammer to the thumb.

The Automaton Girl's creator wanted her to be as human as possible, and this
includes such things as consumption of food and removal of waste. The
methane-burning thing most closely approximates that in mechanical terms,
compared to any other power-up system I've yet heard of.

She really likes Mexican. Guess why.

Other, more esoteric clockworks may appear in later chapters, like an idea I
have for a sound-powered clockwork. An Evil Clockwork Twin From Another
Dimension that resembles one of the students at the college, is functionally
blind (that is, the mechanomancer couldn't figure out how to make the eyes
right, so built in a sonar system instead), and charges up at raves,
concerts, and with his roommate's stereo.

I plan to stay one or two chapters ahead at all times up to the end of the
story, so once chapter 2 is done I'll send the first chapter to the list.
Expect it sometime next week, unless I fall into an Otherspace or something.

...it can happen!

Because automatons are magickal, it doesn't have to be a huge amount,
actually. Time-wise, at least. If whatever's winding them up goes real fast
(like the spinning handle), a few hours would be enough to build up a lot of
energy. The growing and hair and all that would probably require more
energy, but not necessarily all THAT much more.
I really like the bedsheet vibrator thing. Particularly if it was somehow
really suped up, possibly by the mechanomancer's mundane mechanical skills.
Who knows?
I do kinda like the idea of the girl sleepwalking mysteriously and the other
folk trailing her, maybe getting lost in that Study Hall before emerging in
the weird furnace room. Hell, maybe she just sucks in steam, letting it
condense real tight, slowly letting it off during the day to power herself.
It would also explain why she sweats, but the sweat is never salty.
People wandering around in trances at night to do mysterious, ineffable
tasks is always fun.
