Oh, yeah.  Mess with him with the yellow sign.  But, as far as I'm concerned 
this is a role-playing issue (remember role-playing?) as opposed to a desire 
issue.  It is up to the character to play that avatar within the context of 
the game.  If the player is successful I, as the GM, would award him his 
first point(s) in that avatar skill.  I have a player in my game who was 
unconciously manifesting The Merchant.  At some point I awarded him points 
in that avatar skill.  He wasn't sure if he was pleased or not.  I'm sure 
that he will be less sure when I spring "Swap Meet" on the PC's (from 
"Weep") in the middle of "To Go" - they're in Las Vegas,now.  They WILL have 
fun.
