Fair enough :)
I was on a revival team that travelled around Florida, mostly visiting
small churches in small towns and leading revivals, youth camps and
stuff along those lines. We had a team of four, a music leader, a
pianist, and activities leader and myself as the preacher.
We ended up in Homasassa Springs, Fl., a small community near
Clearwater. Their economy was apparently based on shrimping, but the
supplies of shrimp in their commonly, um, shrimped areas had rapidly
diminished, which meant much of the area was in dire poverty.
We came to Homasassa Springs Baptist Church to lead a youth week. Many
of the kids who came to the church were from the hardest hit families in
the area and appreciated that there was a place they could come and not
be mocked for wearing the same clothes all week.
The week was going great - the kids were having fun, the adults were
sincerely appreciative, people were being "saved" and so on. We were
certain that we were doing Th'Lawd's work. On Thursday, we did some
stuff with the kids in the morning, then I went to the pastor's house,
where he had set up a mattress in his spare room for me to sleep on. I
closed the door, loosened my tie, took off my jacket and lied down to
rest for a few minutes.
I began taking slow, measured breaths to relax. After a few minutes, I
realized I could hear something else in the room. I stopped breathing
and it became clear that something else was breathing in the room as
well, and was coming closer. I tried to open my eyes, but couldn't, and
soon the breathing felt and sounded like it was right in my ears, with
someone cupping their hands over them, echoingly loud.
I finally got my eyes open and the entire room was pitch black, but for
a pair of yellow eyes. The breathing in my ears was painful. I
couldn't move at all. My mind kinda went "blhblblblblbleh" for a bit
while I tried to comprehend what was going on (Hm, did I fail or succeed
an Unnatural Sanity check?).
I finally sputtered out "In the name of Jesus Christ, begone!"
And it all disappeared. I bolted upright, looked around and there was
nothing but the room as it was when I laid down. I didn't lose any time
and just couldn't explain it. And I didn't tell anyone about it for two
weeks.
