The PCs get into a regular subway car, filled with run of the mill commuters
and such.
Everythings normal, until at one point the lights flicker, blinking off
entirely for a second or two. When the lights come back on, the PCs are
alone in the car. The subway keeps on going, passing several normal
stations before the names start becoming unfamiliar.
When the train pulls to a stop, its in a dark and unpleasant looking
station. Half of the lights are out, and half of those that remain are
constantly buzzing and flickering. Only the doors of the PCs subway car
open, and as soon as they are all out the doors will slam shut and the train
will begin moving again.
The PCs will find themselves presented with a maze of dark and twisty
passages, adorned with strange graffiti and stranger ads, for products and
movies that the PCs have never heard of.
(Ever seen Grant Morrisons comic book DOOM PATROL? Theres a bit with one
of the character traveling into the mind of another, using a subway motif,
thats simply lovely. The various posters that we get to glimpse here and
there are quite marvelously disturbing.)
Theyll get lost, naturally, but eventually theyll find themselves at the
Hub. Its a huge room, far bigger than it has any right to be, with a
ceiling so high that it cannot be seen. Free-standing lights here and there
create little pockets of illumination, through which they can see people
moving. The room is eerily silent, despite the people who can be seen
walking about; no one seems to be talking to anyone else.
The Hub is where lost people end up. None of them intend to find their way
there, but the place has its way of bringing them. Getting out again,
theres the hard part
if it becomes known that the PCs have a ticket home,
theyll be caught in a mob of desperate people, any one of whom would
cheerfully kill for a ticket back to the real world.
