Weird beasts yes, funky races no... with a caveat. If you're serious about
your magic, you can transform your body to channel it better. Specializing
like this makes you quicker off the mark with your spells, at the cost of
never being able to cast spells outside your specialty. If done right, you
get physical mutations that are weird and/or beneficial -- stuff like
growing wings or bleeding flame or developing useful (if hideous) serpent
features. If done wrong, you just get weird.
Really, a lot of the use of fantasy races seems to play out as
crypto-racism. So instead of falling into that, I just went with the
source and provided a game where genuine racism is a very real social force.
Magic can be pretty buff. There's a spell on the lists that lets you kill
everyone you see, and you can do it selectively -- so, stand on a mountain
and kill everyone who's wearing the other guy's colors. It can be resisted
(a bit) and it takes ten hours to cast, and everyone within many miles is
likely to know you're cooking something up... but the potential is there.
