Well, I've been maced and tear gassed, so I think I can give you a pretty
good perspective on it. When I was maced, the burning and coughing and
blurred vision lasted about a minute, maybe two. I was driving, and some
road ragin arsehole came up on my side and maced me through the window, so I
prolly didn't even really get the full effect. I had burning around my eyes
and nose, and had to blink very frequently to prevent tearing up for a good
10-15 mins afterwards.

When I went through basic training, we had to experience getting tear
gassed, and that was much worse than being maced. I ran out of the little
hut where they expose you to the CS with my nose running like a faucet, half
gasping for breath, half vomiting, totally blind. They make you walk around
a large perimeter, flapping your arms, saying something like "my opens are
open and my arms are flapping." The effects of that stuff last a good
while. It was prolly 5 minutes before I could see clearly, and the burning
on my skin lasted an hour at least.

Hope that helps!
Rich;)
