I've heard really excellent things about Mutants &
Masterminds. I may be willing to pick up a copy sometime
soon and port things over if I feel the need to make
something d20.
The wound system (from what little I've heard) could work
with UA as you have one bad guy killed by a single bullet
in the head while another bad guy is shot 11 times and is
still plugging away.
I'm not too keen on the Wounds system of UA, because they
are basically Hit Points. But, I can handle the Wounds
because they're limited (none of this 200 hit points
because I'm 20th level nonsense), they can be overcome (a
01 Firearms roll can pretty much ruin someone's short
life), and they have consequences (no real easy healing).
It's the same reason I tolerated Call of Cthulhu's hit
point system.
In short, one factor I examine when looking at a new game
is, "If an unskilled fighter gets a lucky blow with a
knife, can the expert fighter die in one bloody mess?" In
out-of-the-box D&D, no. It's possible in Spycraft, though.
And from the sounds of it, M&M. And of course, UA. *wink*
So I don't dismiss d20 entirely, but I acknowledge that it
requires a lot of work for some game worlds. For it to
work in UA, I feel that it would cease to be d20 (which
isn't too bad).

Really didn't like the Mechanomancer d20 write-up, but how
can one compare to the original UA version?
