Maybe it was one of those deep memory problems. I just
liked the idea of a self-taught fleshworker - he had
more of a tattooist mindset.

He trying to turn himself into Quetzacoatl, but only
looked like a really thin guy with weirdly-scaled skin
(emergent feathers and snake scales) and lips that
where angling as a beak-thing. Hence the chicken
aspect.
