[UA] Book Recommendation

Been a while since I last saw a book recommendation on the list, so....

Just finished _Hard As Nails_, by Dan Simmons.  A "Joe Kurtz" book, latest 
in a series of very violent crime novels.

Nothing supernatural about the plot, but still felt very UAish to me 
nevertheless.  A couple of truly horrific scenes (including an especially 
unsettling one at an abandoned amusement park), a hero with plenty of 
hardened Violence notches, and some interesting characterization.

Simmons is an excellent, and verstaile, writer.  I suspect that most of the 
folks on this list are already familiar with him, but if not: check him out. 
  He's got a handful of SF books, the Joe Kurtz series, and a number of 
horror novels.  It's horror where he does his best work, in my opinion, 
particularly with _Carrion Comfort_.
