[UA] A place to start my UA campaign

I'm starting a street level UA campaign, and my players liked the
narrative structure in which they are all university graduate students
on a project to know how deep the occult subculture goes. Now I'd like
some advice from you as for which town or city I'm going to make this
happen.

As I'm Portuguese, and so are my players, for us the USA are more
fictional than real, so to speak. And I'd like to avoid any city with a
lot of baggage this side of the Atlantic, like NYC, LA, San Francisco,
Chicago, New Orleans. But I'd like to use a real city. I like to use
Lovecraft's advice on writing weird fiction: everything but the
unnatural you're specifically dealing with should be rigorously
naturalistic.

Can you suggest a moderately big city with a not-quite-famous university
and some sizeable occult/new age/pagan scene, to start my campaign?
